Now, I picked up this well-written collection of essays and had the same reaction: It felt awkward to read an essay on Franzen’s foray to China to find the manufacturer of a stuffed puffin, followed by a review of a detective series of books. That place, to extrapolate further, can be mental and psychological as well as geographical. The literary criticism was fine, if you like that sort of thing and were, perversely, reading this book for book recommendations.

Each one dripping with the authors desire to be viewed as smart and tortured. Devoid of purpose on the island, his mind races. Five minutes in and I’m already overwhelmed by his arrogant self-indulgent navel-gaze-y Franzen-ness. C This is a collection of essays and while there are a few standouts see the two focused on birds and zfuerathe majority are just “ok,” and the early literary criticisms and novel reviews are a bit of a struggle to pour through.

Although I will continue to admire Jonathan Franzen’s writing abilities, I will no longer feel the need to pick up his works. Well, okaaay… But I couldn’t help thinking that maybe there was a third way. Patty was the ideal sort of neighbor, who could tell you where to recycle your batteries and how to get the local cops to actually do their job.

Published November 8th by Salamandra first published atuera I liked but never loved some of his stuff, sympathized with a few of his ideas in particular, his feeling that technological advances are rarely cool, largely useless but nonbothersome, and sometimes screw your Grand-pah lifestyle over, as with Microsoft Wordbut w I can’t seem to get ahold of Jonathan Franzen.

His voice is a distraction, making the listening experience unpleasant.
